Week 1 Introduction

My name is Tyler Rhoades and I am from Tulsa, Oklahoma. I am currently a senior at the University of Oklahoma and am studying chemical biosciences. I am also a pre-med student and am applying to medical school. In my free time I enjoy being around other people. I hate being alone, so even just going to a coffee shop or something makes me happy.
I love to watch sports. I especially like to watch OU football. One of the best memories of my life was being at the Sugar Bowl and watching OU beat Alabama. My student tickets somehow ended up in the front row and I had an incredible time. Besides football, I enjoy watching basketball. Like everyone else in Oklahoma, my favorite team is the Oklahoma City Thunder.
I love food a lot. My favorite type of food is Italian, however, I like many different types of food. Although I love food, I hate onions, so if a dish has onions in it, I won’t eat it or, if the recipe calls for it, will leave them out. I want to learn how to cook better and how to pair wine with food. I got this inspiration from the documentary Somm that explores the world of a Master Sommelier. Deemed the hardest test to pass in the world, a Master Sommelier is someone who can taste a wine and know exactly what region, year, soil type, grapes, and vineyard the wine came from. I find it interesting because the majority of us do not heavily rely on our sense of taste to learn more about things.

Overall, I am looking forward to exploring different ways to express my creativity in this class. As a science major, it is hard to find much creativity in my major classes, however, I am hoping this class will challenge me to think more creatively about tangible experiences.

  1. I am also from Tulsa and am also applying to medical school. That documentary you mention seems very interesting. A close friend of mine has been studying oenology for the past year, and I've learned some very interesting things about the science of wine from him. I also have trouble being creative in the way this class demands, so you aren't alone in that regard.

  2. Hi Tyler. I am also a senior here, though I am majoring in International Studies. Going to a coffee shop is definitely a great way to meet people. Good luck with med school! Italian food is amazing. The goal of learning to pair food and wine seems fun. It also seems to be difficult, but it will definitely be worth it!

  3. Hey man, I'm also a pre-med major as well! It seems like we have a lot of similarities! I also enjoy watching sports! I love the Oklahoma City Thunder! I also enjoy Italian food and am really really picky about onions being in my food. I'm extremely envious that you got seats so close at a bowl game! And especially getting to watch such an awesome game for OU football.

  4. Oh, Tyler, I will confess that you probably could not eat any of the dishes that I like to cook because I love onions! In fact, my husband sometimes reminds me when I make things (anything really - stew, soup, chili, spaghetti sauce...) that I shouldn't go too crazy with the onions! I even like roasted onions! Anyway, maybe you could explore some of the foods of India as part of your Storybook. Do you like Indian food? I love it... and so whenever they are describing some festival or feast in the epics, I am thinking of just what delicious foods they might be eating. Even the gods appreciate good food: Ganesha, for example, is notorious in that regard; he even carries a candy dish in one of his hands! His special sweet is called the laddoo... yummmm!

  5. Hi Tyler! I'm also a Mbio pre-med student just like you! I feel like every other blog that i've read this past week has consisted of a student with a science-y major and a desire to go to Medical School! Hopefully we all get in :) I agree with you completely on the being alone part. I hate being alone. Small things like coffee shops, trips to the lake, even grocery stores excite me. Haha. I'm not a hard person to please, good company is usually all I need to be happy. My favorite type of food is Asian. I love Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Hibachi, everything. Trying new foods and restaurants is a huge hobby of mine. Good luck with Med School!

  6. Hi Tyler. It's very nice to meet you. I am also from Tulsa! I bet you find creativity among your science courses in some way! I find organic chemistry to be very creative. I am a biology major and I understand your yearning for creativity among the extremely defined nature of our courses. I don't like onions either. Have you ever had the Indian dish chicken tikka masala? It's my favorite! I recommend you try it sometime! There is a very nice restaurant called Taste of India that I would try! Have a great semester!

  7. Hi Tyler! I like your introduction! Like you, I'm pursuing a future in medicine! I know how hard it is, so I wish you all the best! It is so cool that you have many different interests, and I loved reading about Somm! I have never heard of it or the arduous process to recognize every detail about a wine. It was very informative! And you had a good point-- we really don't rely on our sense of taste that much. Looking forward to reading more of your assignments!

  8. Hey Tyler. I did not realize that there were so many pre-med students in this course. We are all definitely being exposed to a different type of course work, but I've really enjoyed developing my creative writing skills. I, too, am a Thunder fan. In fact, my practice website was about the Thunder. I think that it's really cool that you had front row seats to the beating that we delivered to Alabama. I also learned something from your introduction. I had never heard of a sommelier, but that sounds like a very fascinating talent. I look forward to reading more of your posts.

  9. Hey Tyler. I'm Catherine and it is nice to meet you. I think it is incredible that you are studying chemical biosciences and are pre-med. I admire both of those fields a lot because it takes someone with a caring heart as well as great intelligence. I haven't heard of a Master Sommelier before, but I agree that it is very cool how sensitive the taste buds can be.

  10. Hi Tyler, nice to make your e-quaintance! It seems like there are a lot of STEM majors taking Laura's class, but I think that's a good thing! It's important to familiarize yourself with history and mythology a bit, as they shape the world around you in ways you wouldn't expect. You and are are polar opposites when it comes to people--I usually prefer to be alone. I like to hang out with friends and do fun things, sure, but that kind of stuff takes a lot out of me, and I usually find myself counting the minutes until I can be alone in my room again. But hey--it takes all kinds! I'm also a big food person. Hell, I'm just a BIG person. :P I'm working on that though, so I'm discovering new foods almost daily. Eating healthy is a big challenge, but knowledge is power! Good luck in the class!

  11. Hi Tyler! That documentary looks really interesting! I will have to watch it some time. I love OU football and Thunder as well. (As I am sure most of us do). I wish I could have gone to the Sugar Bowl! I am very excited for OU Texas this weekend though! Also, good luck getting into medical school! I hope to see you around soon!

  12. Hi Tyler! Wow you seem to have a lot of insight on yourself and what you want in life. I think that is awesome for you to admit that you want to find creativity especially since you feel like you cannot find any inside your major. That is great! I think it is interesting how you mention that documentary and it almost seems like it has a very sentimental connection in your life which is amazing! Hope the rest of your semester goes well!

  13. Hi Tyler!
You seem like a very interesting person so I am glad I got to read your introduction.
I like to study and coffee shops and public places too, I concentrate better when there is background noise then when it's completely silent.
I love food too. Love it. Italian is also my favorite - and I like onions.
It's sounds like you pretty much have your future plans figured out ... thats awesome! Good luck getting into med school and hope the rest of your semester goes well!

  14. Hey Tyler nice to meet you. Hey man I love football and one the best feelings I had this year was watching OU smoke Bama. Another great feeling I had was listening to the Bama fans on the radio the following week. All I can say is here is what I heard....Bama fan : (insert some loony theory) ROLL TIDE ROLL TIDE....I still laugh everytime I think of it. Also man I love food, I am a junkie, also being Italian I get to eat all the good food, though unlike you I have not found a food that I do not eat. It was great to meet you and good luck this year!!!!
